Felicity: Hi, my name is Felicity, and today I’ll be interviewing Annie, the founder of 88 Keys Music Academy. Hi, Annie!
Annie: Hi, Felicity!
Felicity: I know you’ve been in the music industry for a while. Before we dive into some questions, can you share a bit about your background in music?
Annie: Sure! I received my Master of Music in Piano Performance from USC, so I’ve been in the field for a while. I’m also the founder and CEO of 88 Keys Music Academy.
Felicity: Awesome! That’s perfect because I have a few questions for you about music courses. With 2025 just around the corner, many people are embracing the “new year, new me” mentality and are considering starting a music course or career. Could you share five reasons why someone should start a music course in 2025?
Annie: Absolutely!

  1. Mental Health Benefits: Music has fantastic mental health benefits. After the challenges of the COVID pandemic, many of us were cooped up at home. Learning an instrument can help reduce stress, anxiety, and even depression, promoting overall emotional well-being.
  2. Boosts Cognitive Skills: Music engages the brain in unique ways, improving memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills. These benefits often carry over into other areas of life.
  3. Creative Outlet: Music provides a wonderful way to express yourself—your emotions, thoughts, and creativity.
  4. Fulfilling Progress: The process of mastering a musical instrument is incredibly rewarding. It offers tangible progress and measurable achievements that build confidence, regardless of age or skill level.
  5. Lifelong Enjoyment: Music is something you can explore and enjoy at any stage of life. Starting lessons in 2025 could spark a lifelong hobby or even lead to a second career.

Felicity: Have you ever had a student who was hesitant at first, but then it turned into a long-term passion for them?
Annie: Definitely! Many of my adult students say they took lessons as kids, between 7 and 10 years old, but quit because they weren’t interested at the time. As adults, they often worry about being too old or having stiff fingers, but they surprise themselves.

For instance, I have a student who started lessons with me at 74 years old. He used to play the trumpet but wanted to learn piano. Now, he practices two hours every day after managing his stock portfolio. He absolutely loves it and tells me how fulfilling it is.

Felicity: That’s amazing! It sounds like sticking with it really pays off, and the benefits are incredible. Thank you for sharing.

Annie: Thank you!
