Hi! My name is Jose Garcia and I’m a drum instructor at 88 Keys and today we’re doing a little crash course on to get started to play some drums.

So, first thing. Hold the drumstick—depends if you’re right or left-handed. But usually, right-handed people, we open up our hands, we have a line on our index finger. Right there. And, about a third of the drumstick, I like to rest the stick right on that line on the index finger, and then put your thumb right behind it, and then curl your fingers.

You’re trying to find the fulcrum point of the stick—but usually like a third of the stick. And then, same thing with the left hand. Pinch, first line, curl fingers.

Do like a pizza triangle shape, usually works for kids. Back straight. Not your thumbs pointed up, but kind of twist it over, and just hit with the wrist. And when you hit, try to bounce the stick up, almost like a basketball kind of dribbling up and down.

Yeah, that’s kind of how you get started playing.

Good luck!
